Cheating

Discussing w/ an instructor friend what to do about several of her students who were found to have submitted essentially the same answers to an assignment. Apparently there's a bit of a debate about such things amongst the faculty, with responses ranging from "nothing" through "let them resubmit" to "fail and expel them". Apparently the institution attempts to leave such decisions to the discretion of the faculty.

i relate this mainly so i can post the policy of one of my law profs, an old dude who had been a US Atty and Dean of Academics before taking the post as lecturer and whom everyone believed would actually carry through:

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

Any student who, in my opinion, has committed academic dishonesty in any form will receive a grade of F in the course. Notice of such action will be submitted to the Dean of Academics and the Supreme Court Ethics Committee, with recommendations of dismissal and presumptive disbarment respectively. As tenured full professor of law, my opinion in such matters is final.

Such pronouncements may not prepare students for the reality of practice (where, imo, cheaters often win), but damn did it keep students from cheating in that course.
